What’s the Difference between Generic and Brand Name Drugs?

Most prescription drugs are known by more than one name. They will have a general name, also known as the generic name, as well as a brand name which is given to the drug by the drug company. For example, Advil is a popular pain reliever. Advil contains ibuprofen which can be found in many other generic forms. No matter what ibuprofen is called, it’s still the same drug whether it’s called Advil or sold in the generic form.

Generic drugs are almost identical to brand name drugs in every way, but normally cost much less. They’re cheaper because once a drug becomes generic anyone can produce it. This increases competition in the market for that particular drug which drives down the price significantly. The drug company that originally invented the drug charges higher prices simply for the brand name alone whilst their patent is still valid.

As an example, Roche created the popular drug Valium. They had a patent for Valium that lasted 12 years during which they were the only company that was able to produce and sell Valium. After the patent expired, other companies were then able to start producing generic versions of Valium and selling them for much less than the brand name version of the drug.

When a drug is first created the original manufacturer gives the drug two names, the generic name and the brand name. Roche gave Valium the generic name of Diazepam and sold it retail as Valium. Since Valium become so popular and well known during the 12 years Roche owned the patent, people still refer to Diazepam drugs as Valium even in their generic form.

Common Scams By Online Pharmacies

Online pharmacies are a multi-billion dollar industry and like any other huge industry there’s always going to be a few bad apples. Some companies will try to take advantage of people attempting to order medication online. There are a few common scams you need to be aware of so you don’t waste your money or get taken advantage of.

The first scam you should be aware of is an online pharmacy asking you to pay upfront using Western Union. Since you send cash with Western Union, it’s a lot harder to track than a credit card purchase with no way to dispute the purchase. This scam is most commonly perpetrated by online pharmacies that send out massive amount of spam emails. Clicking a link to a pharmacy in your email is just asking for trouble. If a pharmacy has no problem breaking the law to spam you, why would they stop there?

This is especially true when the pharmacy doesn’t even have a website. It’s extremely important to do a reality check before purchasing any medications online. Finding online pharmacy reviews can help you to determine which online pharmacy is worthy of your business and which ones you should avoid like the plague. It’s important to check a few different sources to find reviews and information on any company you are thinking about ordering from.

Another scam that’s all too common is one that plays on people’s fears. After an order is placed by a customer, the scammer will call the customer claiming to be an officer from the Customs Office. The fake officer will then tell the customer that the medications they ordered have been confiscated and that they have to pay a fine immediately over the phone. The fake customs officer may claim to be from the country the customer is from or even the country from which the order was placed. They will try to get you to give them credit card information to pay the so called fine or risk further charges.

Customs officers will never ask for money over the phone. The reality is an online pharmacy customer has no reason to worry about ordering a medication they have a prescription for no matter where they are ordering it from. Customers are rarely prosecuted for ordering drugs online.
